Buddy Ben talks in Arte’s “Art Geeks” about our recent ReFunct installation:

New: Ping Pong Ball Suction Construction
Remco Schuurbiers and Bijan Dawallu do Ping Pong Country performances now for more than ten years. For those who are not familiar with the concept, it’s simply about playing ping pong and drinking alcohol, accompanied by the driving rhythm of country music – which actually goes pretty well together.

Now Bijan and Remco were invited to create an installation version of their performance in Lille, as a room inside Hotel Europa. This tiny hotel is for free and all rooms are beautifully decorated in a different way each year. This season, in relation to the upcoming Olympic games, they’re all sports themed (there’s for instance also quite a nice hula-hoop room available). If you want to visit the Hotel Europa together with your friends, simply reserve it online here.
The reason why I’m telling you all this is because the two guys have invited me to spice up their environment with some additional machinery! I came up with a “Ping Pong Ball Suction Construction” which allows another person to influence the game. If you desperately want to find out more about this machine, be sure to check out the video of the contraption on my project page.

ReFunct Media V4.0 -- The Video
For those who missed the exhibition at LEAP: Ben and me have made this zuperprofessional dollyshot which shows this ultrahuge floor installation in its hyperlarge dimensions!
There are also plenty more pics, nice words and interesting equipment lists about this piece on Ben’s official ReFunct V4.0 site.
ReFunct Media V4.0 opening tonight @ LEAP
The title says it all: If you’re in Berlin tonight – don’t miss the opening of this exhibition! Benjamin Gaulon, Gijs Gieskes, TokTek, Karl Klomp and me joined forces to make this massive e-waste-circuit-bending-heaven happen.
Below is just a little preview image. To see the whole thing, you’ll have to come to LEAP, Karl-Liebknecht Str. 13. The show starts at 20:00 with performances of Gijs and TokTek and runs till 4th of May.

Tokyo Heads
I just returned from Tokyo, where my Electronic Instant Camera is exhibited at the National Arts Centre as part of JMAF. Now I have some photos to share:

The camera is set up in a corner of the exhibition. Visitors are invited to come and to take a photo of their head.

They can take one of their pictures home, but they also have to leave another one at the wall of the museum. This wall will become more and more full with photos of Tokyo heads with the time. At the end, there will be heads everywhere.

I particularly liked this photo:

After the exhibition, I took the metro…

(There’s something strange about the Tokyo metro: It plays a different little melody at each stop. I recorded some:)
… and with the underground, I went to Akihabara, Tokyo’s electronic and geek shopping paradise!

The entrance of this shop looked very tempting to me. I don’t know why.

So I went in.

But unfortunately, there was nothing geeky about this shop. There were also no electronic parts to buy. Instead, again, heads.

That was Tokyo.
Officially approved:
I’m honoured to announce that my Electronic Instant Camera is part of 2012 Japanese Media Art Festival’s jury selection!

Monaco
I just returned from Monaco where I’ve been for another edition of the ‘Dancing Machine’ exhibition. This time, it was part of the ‘Monaco Dance Festival’, an annual ballet event which I didn’t knew before.
I’ve taken a few pictures in this maxirich minicountry, to show you the highlights of this trip:

First of all, there’s a casino. That’s maybe the most important institution in Monaco, besides the Grimaldi family. The building looks good, but since I’m not so much of a player, I didn’t go inside. Fellow artist Valère Terrier of Visual System did. He gambled with his per diem and made a couple of hundred Euros in there. Congratulations!

That’s the exhibition venue, the Grimaldi Forum.

At the first night, artist buddy Volker Morawe and me walked to the port. Volker wondered how to invest his artist fee. He considered to buy a superyacht with it.

Next day, I went to the local Ferrari dealer. I borrowed a car for a little test drive on the Formula 1 track. Stuff like this is no problem in Monaco as everyone expects you to be extremely rich.

In the evening we went totally crazy and had a rockstar-like party in my hotel room, where we almost damaged the carpet.
The festival still goes on until the 17th. If you’re in the area, it’s very much worth to visit it!
PING! on Vasarely
Victor Vasarely was one of the first pixel artists:

Look, all pixels:

And wireframes?

There’s a Ping! on the Vasarely!

Finally, Ping-Pixel got out of control and damaged the ceiling.

This all happened during the opening of Gamerz-Festival in Aix-en-Provence.
The exhibition still goes on until the 26th.
Check out also WMMNA-Régines article about nice other art at the festival here.
New Project: Lumenoise
During my stay at La Gaîté Lyrique in Paris, I worked on a light pen which turns any CRT-TV into an audiovisual synthesizer. Learn how it works, build your own and hack it, or watch a video of the device in action after the click.

Here are a few screenshots that I’ve taken when I was playing with it:
